In the Seek vs Indeed comparison, Seek wins on Australian candidate depth and Indeed wins on budget control. Choose Seek for permanent roles where applicant volume decides the outcome. Choose Indeed when you need a hard spending cap or want to test a role before committing money to it.
The Seek vs Indeed decision is the most common one Australian employers face, and it is genuinely close. These two platforms do not compete on the same axis. Seek competes on reach into the Australian candidate market. Indeed competes on how you pay. Understanding that difference resolves most of the confusion.
This comparison is written to be neutral. Both platforms win categories below, and we have named the situations where each one is the wrong choice.
Seek vs Indeed: the short version
| Factor | Seek | Indeed | Winner |
| Australian candidate depth | Largest local pool, built since 1997 | Broad but more diffuse, global platform with an Australian portal | Seek |
| Pricing model | Variable per ad, set by role, location and candidate depth | Live auction, charged per started application. Three free posts monthly. | Indeed |
| Budget control | Committed cost per ad. Volume discounts on upfront ad budgets. | Hard daily or monthly cap you can stop at any time | Indeed |
| Cost predictability before spend | Price visible via lookup tool before posting | Auction price varies, so final cost is estimated not fixed | Seek |
| Free option | None | Up to three posts per calendar month, 30 days each | Indeed |
| Ad longevity | Paid prominence for the ad period | Free posts lose visibility within about a day | Seek |
| Regional and non-metro reach | Strong, particularly outside capital cities | Thinner in regional markets | Seek |
| Suits low-volume, budget-conscious hiring | Cost per ad is the highest of the major boards | Designed for exactly this | Indeed |
Best for, in one line each
- Seek is best for permanent roles where applicant volume determines whether you fill the position, especially in regional Australia.
- Indeed is best for employers who need to cap spend precisely, or who want to test candidate interest before paying anything.
How each platform charges you?
Seek: committed cost, predictable exposure
Seek prices each advertisement individually. The amount depends on the job title, the vacancy location and how many relevant candidates are active in that area. You can see the price through a lookup tool on the employer dashboard before committing, which means no surprises at checkout.
Employers who hire regularly can purchase an ad budget upfront. This works like a line of credit, and larger budgets attract larger discounts. Once the initial budget is used, further ads continue at the discounted rate for the contract period. Consequently, the effective cost for a frequent recruiter looks considerably better than the single ad price suggests.
The downside is straightforward. You pay whether the ad performs or not. A weak job description costs exactly the same as a strong one.
Indeed: pay when candidates act
Indeed took the opposite approach. Employers posting directly can run up to three free jobs per calendar month, each live for up to 30 days. Beyond that allocation, sponsored placement runs through a live auction.
Critically, Indeed now charges per started application rather than per click. A started application means a candidate has pressed apply and begun the process, which filters out casual browsing. Indeed retired its earlier pay per application model in December 2023 following billing complaints, so employers returning after a gap should check the current terms rather than rely on memory.
Independent 2026 analyses put typical effective cost per application in the region of A$15 to A$50, though this swings substantially with role competitiveness and location. You set a cap, and you can stop whenever you choose.

Candidate reach: where Seek holds its lead
Seek Limited is an ASX listed Australian company, founded in 1997 and headquartered in Melbourne, reporting revenue of A$1,097 million for 2025. That scale reflects nearly three decades of building an Australian candidate pool, and it is not easily replicated.
Indeed operates globally with a dedicated Australian portal. Its total traffic is larger, but traffic is not the same as relevant Australian candidates for a specific role in a specific town. In our assessment, Seek’s advantage is most pronounced in regional and non-metropolitan hiring, where Indeed’s candidate density thins out noticeably.
That said, in metropolitan markets and for broadly advertised roles, the gap narrows considerably. Many Sydney and Melbourne employers report comparable applicant flow from a well sponsored Indeed campaign.
What the current market means for this decision?
Context matters here. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded 329,500 job vacancies in May 2026, down 2.1 per cent over the quarter and 30.3 per cent below the May 2022 peak. The decline was broad, affecting most states and both sectors.
Fewer vacancies generally means more applicants per role. Therefore, the constraint for many employers in 2026 has shifted from attracting enough applications to filtering the ones they receive. That shift subtly favours Indeed’s model, because paying per started application aligns cost with genuine interest rather than raw impressions.
However, it does not favour Indeed universally. In sectors where vacancies rose, such as manufacturing which grew 16.9 per cent over the quarter to May 2026, competition for candidates remains real and Seek’s depth still earns its price.
A third option, briefly
For completeness, CloudColleague is an Australian platform that handles both employment listings and one off tasks in a single account. That combination is uncommon, and it suits businesses whose work genuinely mixes ongoing roles with short term jobs.
We will be direct, since this is our own platform. CloudColleague does not match Seek’s candidate volume, and for a regional permanent hire where applicant numbers decide the outcome, Seek remains the stronger choice. Neither does CloudColleague replicate Indeed’s auction mechanics. It is worth considering when platform consolidation matters more to you than raw reach, and not otherwise.
The decision, simplified
- Choose Seek if the role is permanent, located outside a capital city, or urgent enough that applicant volume is the deciding factor.
- Choose Indeed if you need a hard spending cap, are hiring in a metropolitan market, or want to gauge interest before spending anything.
- Choose both if the role has proven hard to fill. Running a paid Seek ad alongside a sponsored Indeed campaign reaches genuinely different candidate behaviours.

Frequently asked questions
Neither is better across the board. Seek is better for candidate depth, particularly regionally. Indeed is better for budget control and for testing a role at no cost. Match the platform to the role rather than looking for an overall winner.
Indeed is easier to control, which usually makes it cheaper in practice. It is not automatically cheaper. In competitive categories the auction price rises, and a heavily sponsored Indeed campaign can cost more than a single Seek advertisement.
No. Seek does not offer a free posting tier. Indeed allows up to three free posts per calendar month for employers posting directly, each live for up to 30 days.
Indeed has moved to charging per started application for sponsored jobs, meaning you pay when a candidate begins applying rather than when they click through to view. The earlier pay per application model was discontinued in December 2023.
For hard to fill roles, yes. The two platforms reach overlapping but distinct audiences. A common approach is one paid Seek advertisement plus a sponsored Indeed campaign with a modest daily cap, then comparing cost per qualified applicant across both.
